How the typing speed test works

The timer begins with your first character. The test compares every typed character with the reference passage, calculates accuracy, and converts correctly typed characters into net words per minute. A standard word is defined as five characters, including spaces and punctuation.

Choose a duration before typing. Fifteen seconds is useful for a quick check, while 60 seconds gives a more stable result because brief bursts and early mistakes have less influence.

How to get a fair result

  • Use your normal keyboard and a comfortable seated position.
  • Complete one warm-up round before recording a score.
  • Do not correct every error if correction breaks your natural rhythm.
  • Compare results from the same duration and device.

Understanding WPM and accuracy

Speed without accuracy is not useful for most work. A slightly slower result above 96% accuracy is usually more repeatable than a fast result with frequent errors. Device layout, language familiarity, passage difficulty, and whether you touch type all affect the number.
