When a microphone appears silent, the fault may be in the hardware, connection, operating system, browser permission, selected input, application setting, or audio level. Changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify. A better approach is to follow the signal from the microphone toward the application.

1. Confirm the physical connection

For a wired USB microphone, connect directly to the computer and try another port. Remove an unpowered hub during testing. For an analog headset, make sure the plug matches the computer’s jack type; separate headphone and microphone plugs require different sockets than a combined headset connector.

For wireless devices, confirm that the microphone is charged, connected to the intended receiver or Bluetooth profile, and not muted on the device itself. Many headsets have a physical mute switch or mute-by-lifting boom.

2. Check the operating-system input

Open the system sound settings and select the intended input device. Speak at a normal level and watch the system meter. If the meter does not move here, a webpage is unlikely to receive a signal.

Raise input gain gradually rather than setting it immediately to maximum. Excessive gain amplifies background noise and can cause clipping. Also check system privacy controls: some platforms have a global switch that prevents applications from accessing microphones.

3. Check browser permission

Open the online microphone test and start the test. The browser should ask for permission. If no prompt appears, inspect the site-permission icon near the address bar and set microphone access to Allow. Reload the page after changing permission.

Permission can be blocked at more than one level. The browser may be allowed by the operating system while the individual website is blocked, or the reverse.

4. Select the correct device

Computers often expose several inputs: a laptop array, headset microphone, webcam microphone, monitor audio device, virtual cable, or docking-station input. Meeting applications can remember a different device from the system default.

Disconnect unused audio devices temporarily. Their removal makes it easier to see which input is active. Reconnect them one at a time after the correct microphone works.

5. Close applications that hold the microphone

Most systems allow shared access, but drivers and professional audio software can request exclusive control. Close meeting tools, recording applications, voice effects, streaming software, and virtual audio mixers. Restart the browser and test again.

If the microphone works after one application closes, review that application’s exclusive-mode or monitoring settings.

6. Interpret the meter

Different meter behaviors point to different problems:

7. Compare another application and device

Record a short sample in the operating system’s basic recording application. If it works there but not in the browser, focus on browser permissions, extensions, and device selection. If it fails everywhere, test the microphone on another compatible computer or phone.

8. Drivers and restart

A complete restart clears devices left in a bad state. Install audio drivers and firmware only from the computer, motherboard, interface, or microphone manufacturer. Generic driver-download websites add risk and rarely improve diagnosis.

The web test analyzes live level only; it does not upload or save audio. Once you see a healthy meter, open the target meeting or recording application and select the same input there.
