An unintended double-click happens when one deliberate press produces two input events. The visible symptom can be subtle: a file opens when you meant to select it, text selection drops unexpectedly, a drag ends early, or an application performs a command twice.

The most common cause is an aging button switch, but it is not the only possibility. A good diagnosis separates physical switch bounce from operating-system settings, wireless problems, application behavior, and intentional fast input.

Start by reproducing the problem

Open the mouse double-click test and select a threshold close to your operating system’s setting. Click slowly and deliberately inside the target. Do not intentionally click twice.

Repeated pairs that arrive only a few milliseconds apart are suspicious. A single pair after many normal clicks is less convincing. Test each button separately and note whether the problem follows one physical switch.

Check the double-click setting

Operating systems use a time threshold to decide whether two intentional clicks form a double-click. If the threshold is too long, two separate presses may be interpreted as one double-click action. Reduce the allowed interval slightly and retest in the application where you noticed the problem.

This setting does not normally cause one switch press to create two low-level events, but it can make ordinary clicking feel overly sensitive.

Rule out connection problems

For a wired mouse, connect directly to another USB port and temporarily remove hubs, extension cables, and adapters. For a wireless mouse, charge or replace the battery, move the receiver closer, and test away from congested wireless devices.

Connection problems more often cause missed input or brief disconnections than clean double-click pairs, but removing them makes the later diagnosis more reliable.

Test software and browser differences

Restart the computer and test before launching mouse utilities, macro software, remote desktop clients, or game overlays. Then compare two applications or browsers. If the behavior occurs only in one program, inspect that program’s shortcuts, extensions, and input settings.

Also test the mouse on another computer if possible. If the same physical button produces repeated pairs on two systems, a hardware problem becomes much more likely.

Mechanical switch wear

Many mouse buttons use small mechanical switches. When contacts close, they can bounce electrically before settling. The mouse firmware normally filters this behavior through a debounce interval. Wear, contamination, or changed spring tension can make the bounce last longer than the filter, producing two reported presses.

Software can sometimes increase debounce time, but that may also add input delay and does not repair worn contacts. Firmware settings should come from the device manufacturer rather than an unknown utility.

Cleaning and repair considerations

External cleaning can remove debris around a button, but opening a mouse may void its warranty and exposes delicate components. Do not spray liquid into the switch. If the device is under warranty, document the test result and contact the manufacturer before attempting repair.

Replacing a soldered switch requires appropriate tools and experience. For many inexpensive devices, replacement is safer and more economical. For specialized hardware, a qualified repair service may be worthwhile.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Confirm repeated unintended pairs in a test.
  2. Adjust the operating-system double-click threshold.
  3. Change the port, connection path, or wireless conditions.
  4. Test without mouse utilities and in another application.
  5. Test the same mouse on another computer.
  6. Use warranty service or repair if the fault follows the device.

Do not judge the device by a CPS challenge alone. Fast intentional input is expected there. A double-click fault is best demonstrated by repeated extra events during slow, controlled single presses.
